Breaking News: China Warns US Over Taiwan Ahead of Trump’s Visit to Beijing

1 May 2026 | Washington, Beijing

Beijing — China has issued a strong warning to the United States over the Taiwan issue, urging Washington to “make the right choices” to maintain stability between the two global powers, just weeks before President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Beijing.

Call Between Top Diplomats

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that both sides should “safeguard the hard-won stability” in China-US relations and prepare for high-level engagement.

According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang emphasized that cooperation should be expanded while differences are managed carefully to avoid escalation.

Taiwan at the Center of Tension

Wang stressed that the Taiwan issue remains the “biggest risk point” in China-US relations, describing it as a core national interest for China.

Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and strongly opposes US military support and international backing for the self-ruled island.

Trump’s Upcoming Visit

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China on May 14–15 for talks with President Xi Jinping — his first visit since returning to the White House in January 2025.

Washington and Beijing previously reached a trade truce in October after months of tensions over tariffs and economic competition.

Middle East and Global Issues Also Discussed

The two diplomats also exchanged views on the Middle East, where China maintains ties with Iran but has remained cautious following recent US-Israel military actions that have impacted global oil prices.

China’s Message to the US

Wang urged the United States to honor its commitments and “make the right choices,” saying this would help open new opportunities for cooperation and promote global peace.

US officials confirmed the call, stating it was also part of preparations for Trump’s upcoming visit but provided no additional details.
