It is located approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the US embassy in Yangon.

The sources said police are treating the case as a possible homicide and have taken a Thai woman into custody. No charges have been publicly filed, and it remains unclear what relationship, if any, the detained woman had with the deceased diplomat.

Limited Official Response

Myanmar's military-led government typically provides little information to the media, particularly in sensitive cases involving foreign nationals. The duty officer answering the phone at the police station responsible for the area where the Sakura hotel is located refused to comment and hung up on an Associated Press reporter.

The manager of the Sakura hotel also declined to comment on the incident, citing respect for guest privacy and the ongoing police investigation.

The Thai embassy in Yangon and Thailand's foreign ministry refused to say whether they had provided consular support to the detained suspect or give any other information about the case.

The US State Department has not released the diplomat's name, age, or position at the embassy, pending notification of family members.
