Trump Timeline for Iran

"Now we're finishing the job. I think in two weeks or maybe a few days longer, we'll do the job. We want to knock out everything they've got." โ€“ Donald Trump

Trump stated that US forces would end operations in Iran "very soon," suggesting a timeline of two to three weeks. He added that after leaving, the responsibility for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open will rest with the countries that rely on it.

Public Opinion and Polling

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that two-thirds of Americans believe the US should work to end its involvement in the Iran war quickly, even if it means not achieving all the Trump administration's objectives. Among Republicans, 40% supported ending the conflict quickly, while 57% favored longer involvement.

Regional Allies Prepare

The Wall Street Journal reported that the United Arab Emirates is preparing to assist the US in opening the Strait of Hormuz by force if necessary. The UAE is lobbying for a UN Security Council resolution authorizing action. This could mark the first Gulf nation to actively participate in the conflict, which began on February 28.

Asian stock markets surged following Trump's remarks on ending operations. South Korea's Kospi rose 6.4%, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 climbed 4%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.9%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 increased 1.7%, and Taiwan's Taiex was up 4.3%. Investors responded positively to signs of potential de-escalation in the region.

Senator Marco Rubio suggested the US would need to "reexamine" the NATO alliance after the Iran conflict, questioning the utility of American forces stationed abroad if allies deny basing rights and overflight privileges during critical operations.

Trump on Responsibility

Trump emphasized that securing the Strait of Hormuz is not the US's responsibility, stating: "That's not for us โ€ฆ That'll be for whoever's using the strait." He criticized allies for not providing more support for American efforts in the Iran war.
