USA Stock Market: Big Tech's Dominance in 2023 and the Global Market Impact 18-Dec-2023

In a surprising turn of events, big tech stocks, have reasserted their dominance in the market, outpacing the remaining 493 companies in the S&P 500. The likes of Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon.com, Nvidia, Tesla, and Meta Platforms have collectively surged by an impressive 75% in 2023, contributing to their substantial market share of about 30% in the S&P 500.

This resurgence marks a stark contrast to the previous year when the Magnificent Seven faced a downturn, losing a staggering $4.7 trillion in combined market value. However, the year 2023 has seen a remarkable comeback fueled by a fervor around artificial intelligence and optimistic expectations of windfall profits in the future.

As of now, these tech giants are on track to shape the market's earnings growth, with earnings among S&P 500 companies expected to rise by 0.7% this year, a figure that would plunge into negative territory without the substantial contribution of the Magnificent Seven.

The increasing dominance of these tech stocks raises concerns about market concentration and vulnerability to a downturn if a few heavyweight stocks falter. Last year's slump in big tech stocks, triggered by rising interest rates, had heightened such concerns. However, the current rally suggests a departure from the expected trend, driven by the hype around artificial intelligence, robust economic data, and easing inflation.

Microsoft, Apple, and Nvidia have been standout performers, with Microsoft witnessing a 55% rally, Apple adding 52%, and Nvidia's shares more than tripling, pushing its market value beyond $1 trillion. In contrast, only 23% of S&P 500 stocks are within 10% of their record highs, indicating a significant performance gap.

While some analysts predict a shift in dominance towards beaten-down sectors like industrials, materials, and transportation, others argue that tech stocks' performance is integral to market stability. Tech stocks, despite appearing expensive relative to the broader market, continue to attract attention, and their rebound is attributed to higher interest rates helping them earn yields on cash.

As the market navigates through uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions and economic challenges, the question remains whether the Magnificent Seven will maintain their stronghold or if other sectors will stage a comeback in the coming year. Investors and strategists are closely watching these developments, evaluating the impact on global market dynamics.
