China: 31,000 Forced to Flee Homes in Beijing as Typhoon Doksuri Brings Heavy Rains 31-July-2023

Beijing experienced an unprecedented weather event as Typhoon Doksuri, one of the strongest storms to hit China in years, passed through the capital, causing heavy rainfall and flooding. The city's observatory reported that the average overnight rainfall reached 140.7mm (5.5in), with the maximum recorded rainfall in the Fangshan area reaching a staggering 500.4mm (19.7in). As a result, more than 31,000 residents were compelled to evacuate their homes in the city, according to state broadcaster CCTV. In addition to the impact on Beijing, the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri led to continuous heavy rain in the neighboring regions of Hebei, Tianjin, and eastern Shanxi as it dissipated over northern China. The storm's reach was not limited to the capital, as it brought widespread flooding and evacuations in the southern province of Fujian over the weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes due to the flooding caused by the typhoon.

Despite the scale of the storm, there were no reported casualties or significant damage. However, the authorities took precautions to ensure public safety. More than 4,000 construction sites suspended work, almost 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage, and various scenic spots in the city were closed temporarily to minimize potential risks. While Typhoon Doksuri continues to weaken, forecasters have issued warnings that Typhoon Khanun is approaching and poses a threat to China's densely populated coast. The authorities expressed concern about the potential damage Khanun may inflict on corn and other crops that have already been adversely affected by Doksuri's impact. Typhoon Doksuri made landfall on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. Power lines were downed, and trees were uprooted, affecting around 880,000 people in coastal Fujian. More than 354,400 individuals were evacuated and resettled to safer locations, and the storm caused approximately 478 million yuan (£52m) in direct economic losses, as reported by state media. The Trinity test sequence, a cinematic spectacle in its own right, leaves the audience breathless with its immersive visuals and heart-pounding intensity. While the film's ambition is undeniably Enormoz, it does not shy away from addressing the consequences of Oppenheimer's actions, including the haunting aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

In the aftermath of Typhoon Doksuri, images shared on social media depicted emergency workers tirelessly clearing fallen trees and landslides, while residents waded through thigh-high floodwaters, illustrating the severity of the situation.
