Emergency Response and Scene

Images from the scene about an hour after the shooting showed people standing outside the school comforting one another while police and first responders were inside the building. It appeared to have been secured, although officials had not publicly confirmed the shooter's status.

From its outskirts, it appears to be a normal day in Nonthaburi but the closer you get to the school, the greater the police presence becomes with large silver vans and officers in uniform everywhere.

The children have been evacuated from the school premises and in their place on the bright red, yellow and green covered multipurpose sports area in front of the classrooms are a throng of media and officials.

School and Gun Violence Context

In the 2025 academic year, the school had about 3,100 students and 147 teachers, according to district authorities. The school is part of the Debsirin network, founded by the Thai royal family. Its alumni include prime ministers, scholars and writers.

Thailand is known to have the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in south-east Asia, and the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey in 2017 placed the country 13th globally for small gun possession.

Thailand has seen a series of deadly shootings in the past six years, with children among the victims.

Thailand's Deadly Shooting History

The worst by a single perpetrator in its recent history took place in 2022, when a former policeman ran amok in a three-hour gun-and-knife attack in the north-east that killed 36 people, including 22 children stabbed as they slept at a daycare centre.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ The Big Picture

Thailand has been shaken by yet another mass shooting, this time at a prestigious school just north of Bangkok, where a 14-year-old student killed seven people including his grandparents and himself, injuring more than 30 others. Officials have revised the death toll to seven, confirming the suspect killed his two grandparents and five school staff. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the suspect was "under stress" related to his schooling and appeared to have planned the attack. The tragedy has reignited debate over Thailand's high rate of civilian gun ownership โ€“ the highest in South-East Asia โ€“ and comes just four years after the country's worst mass shooting, when a former policeman killed 36 people including 22 children. As authorities investigate the latest attack, the nation once again grapples with the devastating consequences of gun violence in schools.
