177 Confirmed Dead, 644 Tourists from 33 Countries Missing

Nearly 100 Chinese nationals were missing in Nepal in the area affected by a massive mudslide and flooding, China's foreign ministry said on Thursday. Missing foreigners on the Chinese side include tourists, pilgrims and other personnel, and China is in close communication with Nepal on search and rescue.

32 Bridges Washed Away, Road Damage Exceeds Rs 20 Billion

Floods from Chinese territory entered Rasuwa on Wednesday morning and caused major damage to the road. The devastating flood that reached Trishuli via Lhende River after a landslide in Tibet has blocked the Prithvi Highway, while the road from Galchhi to Rasuwa has been destroyed.

The flood has washed away almost all the concrete bridges from Rasuwa checkpoint to Malekhu. Road Department spokesperson Shubharaj Neupane said that almost all the concrete bridges from Rasuwa checkpoint to Malekhu have been washed away. He said that at least 32 concrete bridges have been washed away. In addition, he said that the motorable bridges on the Sasana River have also been washed away.

"All the bridges from Rasuwa checkpoint to Malekhu have been washed away. It has been confirmed that 32 concrete bridges have been washed away. This number is likely to increase. The small bridges on the tributary rivers have also been washed away," he said.

Currently, the Road Department has only seven bailey bridges in stock. If a concrete bridge is washed away in some place, it can be installed in an average of 15 days and transport services can be operated. However, since the flood washed away more than 30 bridges, the department has only seven in stock.

12 Hydropower Projects of 431 MW Damaged, 196 NEA Employees Out of Contact

Floods entering Rasuwa via Tibet on Wednesday morning have damaged hydropower projects operating and under construction on the banks of Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, 12 hydropower projects of 431 MW have been damaged by the flood.

Of these, 111 MW Rasuwagadhi, 78 MW Salasungi (Sanjen), 14.8 MW Upper Sanjen, 42.5 MW Sanjen, 22 MW Chilime and 20 MW Langtang hydropower projects have been damaged and shut down.

Similarly, 60 MW Upper Trishuli-3A, 14.8 MW Upper Mailung, 5 MW Mailung, 24 MW Trishuli and 14 MW Devighat hydropower stations have been damaged. Nepal Electricity Authority's 25-megawatt solar project in Nuwakot has also been damaged. Authority spokesperson Rajan Dhakal said that exports will be affected if 12 of the 431-megawatt projects in operation are damaged by the flood. The dams and power houses of most of the projects have been washed away.

According to the Authority, 15 projects of 470 megawatts under construction have been damaged by the flood. These include the 216-megawatt Upper Trishuli, 120-megawatt Rasuwa Bhotekoshi, 6.24-megawatt Upper Melung, 37-megawatt Upper Trishuli-3B, and 15.6-megawatt Middle Trishuli.

196 people from NEA projects alone are out of contact. 21 employees of the under-construction Trishuli 3B hydropower plant are out of contact. Similarly, 6 employees from the Chilime power plant and one employee from the residential area have not been contacted. Eleven people working at Trishuli 3 from Chilime Hydropower Company, 92 from Rasuwagadhi Hydropower, 45 from Trishuli-3 'A' powerhouse, one each from Trishuli and Devighat Hydropower are also out of contact.

Workers of projects carried out by the private sector are also out of contact. Eight Korean citizens and 10 employees at the 216 MW Upper Trishuli 1 are out of contact. Similarly, 25 employees and 35 workers of the 20 MW Langtang Khola Hydropower Project are out of contact.

Electricity Supply Restored in Nuwakot, Rasuwa Remains Dark

Electricity supply service disrupted by the Bhotekoshi floods has been resumed. Nepal Electricity Authority has resumed electricity service through alternative transmission system. The Secretariat of the Energy Minister has stated that the repair work of damaged electrical infrastructure has been expedited.

The Authority has stated that electricity supply arrangements have been made through alternative lines from Sindhupalchowk in the flood-affected areas of Kharanitar, Samundratar, Chaugada, Likhu, Panchakanya, Bidur and other areas.

According to Authority spokesperson Rajan Dhakal, work is underway to charge the Chapali-Dewighat 66 kV line and 11 kV from the Chapali substation and to charge the Balaju-Trishuli 66 kV line with an 11 kV line.

In some places in the Trishuli region, alternative arrangements have been made to supply electricity through the Salyantar substation in Dhading. The Authority has stated that efforts are being made to bring the service into operation by using alternative sources in areas where it is difficult to supply electricity through the regular system due to structures damaged by the flood.

According to the authority, electricity service has been completely disrupted in Rasuwa. Rasuwa is the district most affected by the floods. Electricity service is partially disrupted in Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha. The 33 kV substation in Dhading Jahre is blocked due to a five-foot-high landslide.

The NEA said that the work of removing the landslide at the 33 kV substation in Dhading is ongoing. Preparations are underway to immediately transport 500 solar panels to the affected areas.

24 Bank Employees Out of Contact, Branches Washed Away

Wednesday's flood washed away the branches of nine different banks in Syafrubesi, Naumure and Timure. Nepal Bankers Association President Santosh Koirala said that 24 employees were out of contact due to the flood. The flood washed away the branches of Nabil, Global IME, Prabhu, Nepal Investment Mega, NMB, Sanima, Himalayan, Machhapuchhre and Laxmi Sunrise Bank, and Krishi Bikash Bank.

"Everything has been swept away, there is nothing, it is in ruins," he said, "Initially, around 30 people were out of contact, now about 6 people have been contacted, 24 are out of contact, I hope they will be in contact by tomorrow."

Stating that only rescue and relief efforts were being carried out on Wednesday, Chairman Koirala informed that other details of the damage will be collected and assessed from Thursday.

The police have informed that 28 Nepal Police personnel are missing due to the Rasuwa floods. Of the 66 missing, 36 have been contacted and the remaining 28 have not been contacted yet, according to the police. Thirteen out of 23 employees at the Timure Area Police Office have come into contact, while one out of nine employees at the Rasuwagadhi Police Station has come into contact.

According to the police, five out of eight employees at the Syarphubensi Police Station have come into contact, three out of eight employees at the Mailung Temporary Police Station have come into contact, nine out of 10 employees at the Betrawati Police Station have come into contact, and five out of six employees at the Haku Police Station have come into contact, according to the Nepal Police.
